What works in stamp design?

More often than not, simplicity is the greatest tool a designer can use when designing a stamp. Stamps usually fall into four major elements :
1. Portrait bust-This is more often than not a famous person being remembered. normally a head and shoulders view of the figure.
2.Emblem-This can be a coat of arms,badge,flag,national symbol,or a posthorn.
3.Numeric- A design which is based around the value of numbers, often the number on the stamp is the direct focus of the illustration.
4.Illustrative-A stamp which purely relies on the power of the image which is illustrated.

Complex drawing or detailed illustrations do not seem to work in the context of stamp designs because the details cannot be read at such a small scale. no matter whether it is created at stamp size or shrunk down to stamp size,it is difficult to view the aesthetic qualities of a detailed illustration.
